faded memory (2010 - )

  • The first time I deleted my digital photos by accident, I cried long and hard because of all the lost potential.

After I finished, I discovered that recovery software existed and that it brought most of the information back.

A handful of photos, however, were dramatically scrambled. The original photographs rendered into a digital tapestry of incoherent color shifts and pixilated lines.

It reminded me of when digital cameras emerged as the dominant way of capturing everyday memories in the early 2000s.

While I’m not the first to explore the idea that humans could create paintings better than newer digital technology, stroke by meticulous stroke.

In this new world of NFT and Artificial Intelligence, I embrace the dawn of the most recent cycle of technological breakthroughs for what they have become: faded memories of a bygone era.

This series explores technology as a tool of memory, and how despite our best efforts, sometimes that will never be the same.
